Q A
What are the reasons behind it? Yes, some of the recent trigger incidents are

  • Dr Pankaj Narang was a dentist, practising his craft in West Delhi. He got killed the other day. A minor argument over a cricket ball ends in a violent, horrific death.
  • Last month, for four days, a large part of Haryana played host to violence of the mob. A violence that had both social and political approval.
What are the reasons behind it?
  • Our politics and its cultural narrative have combined to make each one of us a little more intolerant, a little more prone to violence, and, worse, a little more unapologetic about our new violent proclivities.
  • We have also come to glorify the use of intimidation and violence as a means to settling an argument. This is supposed to be part of the much-delayed renaissance.
  • This violence-is-good-and-necessary strain has been injected into our cultural consciousness by the new politician and his cousin, the market-seller. We have seen the promotion of a badtameez culture. The creative geniuses among the advertising world have romantised bad manners, by way of attainment of that ultimate gratification — this or that brand, a soft drink, or a car.
  • During the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, we all wallowed in our latent capacity for being rude, shocking, mocking, insensitive. And, because our new rulers themselves believe in being less than polite to the political rivals, we all feel we have the social sanction to promote rudeness, animosity, acrimony, and hatred.
  • Then, there is this aggression of thought that is fashionably instigated every night in the television studios. It effortlessly finds adherents. We insist on shouting when a whisper should do. We are encouraged to believe that unless you are saying something outrageous, that too in a rank discourteous way, you are not going to be heard, leave alone heeded.
